And that’s so Philly. Potholes that won’t stay filled, drivers who force bikes and pedestrians to the sidewalk, young men shooting at each other and nobody sees. If we really wanted Philly to be a tough, fast, tech-based portal of the future, we’d fix the Liberty Bell, and more. It may have rung that first July 4. Abolitionists fighting slavery called it the Liberty Bell and made it a national symbol. But the Bell always sounded funny. We sent it back to its makers to try again. We had it melted and recast. We started the crack to ease its tension. When it spread, we drilled it out. Braced the metal. A healthy pattern: Innovate, fail, try again smarter. That made sense in a town where people made things — clothes, machines, peace, laws, and a Nation. But Philly stagnated. Congress moved to Washington, Jackson killed the Bank. Penn’s city-on-a-hill settled for being a big smoky factory town, “corrupt and contented,” and city leaders gave up fixing the Bell. Finally in 1950, with our factories heading South, the city’s last Republican mayor arranged for the National Park Service to manage the city’s Bell-that-doesn’t-ring as a national relic. Sixty-nine years later, Philade...

Online electrical retailer AO, through its recycling arm AO Recycling, is to open a recycling facility

Online electrical retailer AO, through its recycling arm AO Recycling, is to open a recycling facility for WEEE plastics located close to its existing fridge plant at Telford. AO says that the new four-acre site will allow it to “clean and refine” the plastic it collects from its main fridge recycling facility, which can process up to 700,000 units per year. The new facility is expected to create around 100 jobs. Fridges typically contain plastics such as ABS, polystyrene and polypropylene, which if correctly processed can be used in the production of parts in the automotive sector, or new electrical goods. While AO achieves high recycling rates for much of the fridge content, plastics has remained a difficult market and the investment is securing an important route to new markets for the plastics content. Robert Sant, managing director of AO Recycling, said of the new plant: “The investment was the next natural step in our recycling journey to create a closed-loop process. One of the big hurdles in reuse is producing a plastic that can be used effectively again in another products. Therefore, we have created a plant that can clean and refine to the highest possible standards. ...

Azek-opens-$25M-recycling-plant logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Chicago-based Azek Building Products opened a $25 million recycling facility in Wilmington, Ohio, capable of turning 100 million pounds of used polyethylene a year into a material for its TimberTech brand composite decking. The 102,000-square-foot facility houses a highly automated operation that takes trucked-in bales of post-consumer and post-industrial goods, such as plastic wrap, shampoo bottles, milk jugs and detergent bottles, from throughout the Midwest for reprocessing. The end product is a granular material formulated with wood fiber and extruded three miles away at a manufacturing plant for TimberTech Pro and Edge decking boards. Azek marked the opening with tours on April 23 and also celebrated Earth Day, which was April 22, with attendees. Azek’s goal is for the plant to recycle 100 million pounds annually by 2020. If the goal is reached, Azek could double the amount of material it recycles to 200 million pounds a year. Azek renovated a Wilmington building for the facility and looked to Europe as well as the U.S. for equipment as the company moves forward with plans to divert waste from landfills and become more vertically integrated, said Bobby Gentile, Azek&...

EL CAJON — There is a scene in the classic 1941 film, “Citizen Kane” where an exuberant millionaire playboy Kane (Orson Welles) exclaims, “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.” The context here being that publishing a paper is nothing more than a simple diversion. In local terms, Robert Zakar, who was raised in a family of merchants and has successfully operated gas stations, grocery outlets and convenience stores, decided to take a left turn and delve into — well, for lack of a better term — the body transport business. “When people pass away, we will take the deceased to a hospital or funeral home,” Zakar said. “My brothers would handle the actual transportation, while I would do the marketing and accounting. “At first, I did not want anything to do with removing bodies, it seemed pretty creepy to me; but when I thought about it, I realized that it was about the loved ones left behind,” he said. “I fou...

3D mammograms increasing in popularity for breast cancer screening

More and more women are undergoing 3D mammograms for breast cancer screening in the US, with rates increasing from 13 percent to 43 percent between 2015 and 2017, according to a new study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. The study claims that the new technology digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is more effective than 2D mammograms. Yale University researchers carried out a longitudinal study including 9,673,583 breast cancer screening examinations performed over three years for women between the ages of 40 and 74, with the aim of identifying patterns in the regions of the US that have adopted DBT over 2D mammography. The study discovered that in 2015 DBT was the most popular form of breast cancer screening in 4.6 percent of hospital referral regions, but by the end of 2017, DBT was the main form of screening in 41.8 percent of hospital referral regions. Dr. Ilana Richman, lead author of the study and an assistant professor in general internal medicine at Yale School of Medicine said the increase was “substantial” in the two-year period, adding that the “technology has become really popular.” Regular breast screening is important in trying to find cancerous growt...

Clemson officials increase areas of sweet potato weevil and Benghal dayflower quarantines

CLEMSON — Clemson University’s Department of Plant Industry (DPI) has issued updated quarantine information related to two crop pests: sweet potato weevil and Benghal dayflower. The agency expanded a longstanding quarantine due to sweet potato weevils in Charleston and Beaufort counties to include Jasper, Colleton and Berkeley counties. The agency also increased an area of quarantine in Aiken County due to Benghal dayflower. The original quarantine was implemented in November 2016. The area now includes a section forming a triangle from north latitude 33.380, east to U.S. Highway 1, south to U.S. Highway 125 and north back to north latitude 33.380. The sweet potato weevil is one of the most destructive pests to sweet potatoes in the world, capable of causing losses of up to 97 percent in a single crop. It is widespread on every continent but Antarctica — almost anywhere sweet potatoes can be grown. The quarantine expansion is the result of an ongoing survey which shows the weevil has moved outside the original quarantine area. Sweet potato weevils are mobile and can overwinter on native Ipomea plants like morning glory. Clemson DPI has surveyed 100 percent of production fields ...

Case Study: Capral’s new CW175 curtain wall meets every challenge at University Hospital Geelong expansion

The CW175 curtain wall system from Capral Aluminium Ltd met the architect’s brief for the glazed facade on the University Hospital Geelong building. One of Victoria’s largest and most sophisticated regional public hospitals, University Hospital Geelong provides crucial healthcare services to the State’s second-largest city. The $98.3 million expansion project will deliver emergency, palliative and intensive care treatment for residents of Victoria’s central coast, including expanded oncology and orthopaedic wards, each comprising 32 beds. Other improvements in the seven-level facility include eight additional sub-acute beds, a cancer care wellness centre, as well as ‘sky gardens’ overlooking the nearby Corio Bay. The hospital is also a teaching facility, with formal links to Deakin University and The University of Melbourne. Built by Kane Constructions and designed by Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) Architects, the structural additions provide four extra levels of useable space above the existing emergency department. One of the biggest changes is the incorporation of the highest possible number of single bedrooms. A predominantly glazed facade neatly satisfied the requirements for a...

Should you consider a bit of fun in the sun? Of course you should, and that’s

Should you consider a bit of fun in the sun? Of course you should, and that’s why we’ve compiled a list of the 10 best convertible cars for less than the aforementioned figure, saving you precious shortlisting time. All the cars on this list are capable of losing their lids in a matter of moments to let you bask in the sun’s rays. And when the inevitable rain arrives, you can quickly get their roofs back up again to avoid getting drenched. Speaking of things to avoid, we’ve also included the one open-top car that you should steer clear of, because it’s about as much fun as a wet weekend in Margate. You have been warned. There’s definitely a certain something about a lidless BMW, even if you’re stuck in rush-hour traffic. The folding metal roof of the 4 Series is pretty clever and allows you to operate it on the go at speeds below 8mph. That makes this BMW a fair bit heavier than its soft-top alternatives (the convertible version is actually heavier than the Coupé), so if you want something with a bit more oomph, you could opt for the 435i or 430d if you can find one within your budget. The market for this classy convertible starts at around £15,000 for a 2014-2015 model w...

Everyone remembers where they were when they first heard that a plane had crashed into the twin towers, or that the Berlin Wall fell, or that the Challenger had exploded. Fewer people remember where they were when, on Feb. 6, 2016, then-presidential candidate Ben Carson missed his cue to walk onto the debate stage, setting off the most devastatingly perfect two minutes of a presidential primary ever. Ben Carson would later claim not to have heard the announcer call his name, which is understandable. Why he ignored the multiple other indications that he should walk toward the stage, however, remains unclear. Whatever his reason, the multi-candidate pileup left in his wake was remarkable, and the resulting video became a rich, nuanced portrait that hasn’t been given nearly the attention it deserves. In honor of this week’s Democratic primary debates, which will see 82 candidates going head-to-head for the first time this cycle, let us revisit this historic moment, the perfect distillation of just how stupid our elections can get. In the beginning, it was fine. Chris Christie, a seasoned campaigner, strode onto the debate stage in perfect form. Look at that strut. That smooth, casu...

New Colour-Corrected Lens Series For Line-Scan Cameras

Despite significant advances in area sensors, line scan cameras are still unequaled in their resolution and recording speed. Line-scan cameras with color sensors have been increasingly used for some time now. These sensors are equipped with multiple lines, each of which is equipped with a different color filter; e.g. for red, green, and blue. These cameras are ideal for print inspection because they can simultaneously check the geometry and color values of a product. The five new achromats for the spectral range from 400 nm to 700 nm specifically meet the high demands of modern target cameras with 7μm pixel size. Image acquisition and processing at maximum speed are the key features of industrial applications in which line-scan cameras can be used. The objects to be examined travel at high speed past the sensor lines of the line scan cameras, which capture the object line by line with triggered sampling rates of more than 100 kHz. The lenses used must be excellently adapted to these special conditions in order to guarantee exact, reliable and reproducible imaging results. A low chromatic aberration and minimal distortion are therefore a must. The lenses of the new Coloretto seri...

Metal Foam- Real Life Applications & In-Depth Market Report

Metal Foam is an isotropic highly absorbent metallic solid that has a cellular structure. It has substantially circular and closed pores that can dwell in more than 70% of the total capacity.
